Alternative Methods of Instruction (AMI)

The North St. Francois County R-1 School District (NCSD) has been approved to utilize Alternative Methods of Instruction (AMI) by the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE). By using AMI, it allows school districts to continually give instruction / learning activities to students during unexpected interruptions in the traditional school day or established school calendar.  Such interruptions may include (but are not limited to) days when school is closed for inclement weather (snow), extreme temperatures, widespread illnesses, etc.

AMI learning activities may be review lessons of previously-learned material experienced in the classroom setting. NCSD will notify families when AMI days are established. Should you have any questions over this procedure, please feel free to reach out by calling (573) 431-3300 to contact your student's building.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Why is the District doing this now when it hasn't before?

In response to the passage of SB 727, several school districts are now utilizing AMI to meet the number of student contact days outlined in the legislation.

How will parents be notified if and when a cancelled day of school will be an AMI day?

We will notify families through as many communication methods as we can. This will include messaging families through Infinite Campus (phone, email, text), so please be sure to consistently check your messages and/or Campus Parent Portal inbox messages. In addition, AMI information will be made available on our district Facebook page(s) and this page.

Is my student required to complete the AMI lessons / learning activities?

If students do not complete the AMI lesson or learning activity according to teacher expectation for a particular day(s), he/she will be counted absent for that school calendar date. This absence will count toward and be treated as a normal absence if school were open.

How many AMI days can we expect the District to use?

DESE has approved NCSD to utilize up to five (5) AMI days as necessary. These will likely be used in the first 5 snow days the District declares.

What if my household does not have reliable internet access for electronic AMI learning?

Only particular buildings will provide these activities through student Chromebooks and when feasible. If AMI learning material cannot be made available through technology due to a household's / family's lack of reliable internet access, paper packets of learning activities will be made available. Some district buildings will not be sharing learning activities through technology; they will be sending home paper packets. Please see each building's AMI Plan below to understand their process.
