According to the MNEA Legal Service Director,

Regarding employees with online social network accounts:

It is not forbidden for teacher to have Myspace or Facebook accounts, but it is recommended that teachers not utilize this form of electronic social networking. The risks are primarily two-fold; the employee risks inadvertantly revealing controversial information about themselves to their employer and the employee risks students accessing the social networking site under false pretenses and then inadvertantly having inappropriate contact with their student.

The bottom line for education employees is; There is risk involved in using the Internet in this manner, only the employee can determine if the risk is acceptable to them.
