Postage Stamps for

Black History Month

letter

INTRODUCTION: The United States Postal Service (USPS) has decided to hold a contest for new stamp designs to be released for Black History Month. You want to dazzle the judge by having the best stamps of all the entries for the contest!

TASK: Teams will be created to research famous African Americans. Each team member will select one person to research and create a stamp to contribute to the 4 block of stamps to be sent to the contest.

PROCESS: Each team will first research several African Americans to consider for nomination. Each member will then choose one that they feel should be honored with a postage stamp. Each team member will create a mock stamp to show the USPS what the stamp might look like. These stamps will be joined to form a 4 block of stamps. The USPS likes to issue stamps that have a theme. Consider what your nominees have in common. A persuasive letter must accompany the entry explaining why these people should be honored with their own stamps. What were their contributions to society?
